24 Apr Chron’s boys athlete of the week: Mayno Linares, Elsik
The sophomore bagged a hat trick in the UIL Class 6A boys soccer state semifinal win over Irving. The all-tournament pick scored the game’s opening goal in the 13th minute and added two more in the second half. Linares is the third player ever to score three goals in a boys soccer state tournament game.
What Linares said: “To be honest, the first goal is always the important goal, too. That gives us confidence in the game. To start off with a good pace, it gets us more into the game.”
Logan Leax, John Cooper School
Leax went 6 for 9 with three RBIs and two doubles in three games last week. The George Washington University baseball commitment, who also is a football standout, is currently hitting .409 on the season from the two-hole.
Kesean Carter, The Woodlands
The Texas Tech football commitment finished first in the 100-meter dash (10.64) and anchored the first-place 4×100-meter relay team (40.61) and the first-place 4×200-meter relay team (1:26.83) at the Class 6A District 11-12 area meet.
Trent Thompson, Cypress Falls
Thompson’s shot put of 52 feet and six inches won gold at the Class 6A District 17-18 area meet. Thompson qualifies for regional and Cypress Falls takes home an area meet team title.
